Castle Oheb: A Glimpse into the Past

Origins and Early History
- Medieval Fortress: Castle Oheb likely dates back to the Middle Ages, possibly the 13th or 14th century. It was likely a small, fortified outpost strategically located on a hill overlooking the Seč area.
- Ownership and Purpose: The castle’s early history is shrouded in mystery, but it was probably owned by a local noble family or even the Bohemian Crown. Its primary purpose would have been defense and control of the surrounding territory.
- Popular Hiking Destination: Today Despite its dilapidated state, the castle remains a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the ruins and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside
Decline and Ruination
- Hussite Wars: The 15th-century Hussite Wars, a period of religious conflict and civil unrest, likely played a significant role in the castle’s decline. Many castles and fortresses were damaged or destroyed during this tumultuous time.

Start at the large car park located 400m east of Seč reservoir dam
Follow the GREEN hiking trail down hill, through the short tunnel, across the dam and then along the road to reach the access footpath to the castle – Pod Ohebem junction (1 km from the parking)
At the junction, turn right uphill on the BLUE trail in the direction of Oheb. The ruins are reached in 300m
Take the time to explore the ruins and different viewpoints over the reservoir and then return back the same way
If wanting to visit the the reservoir for swimming or water-sports, take the YELLOW trail to the left, just before returning back to the car park. This leads around the lakeshore to the two main sandy beache
